A 2024 Nature paper used DNA from tombs in this region to argue that Yersinia pestis contributed to the Eurasian “Neolithic Decline” around 3000 BC. That plague (15[1])affected a group named for this region whose mix of WHG and EHG genetics were identified from six people excavated at Motala and whose descendants formed the late hunter-gatherer Pitted Ware culture. A Bronze Age figurine from this region, whose concentric circles may represent a calendar, was gilded on one side and shows a horse standing on two sets of wheels pulling the (*) sun. Boat-shaped battle axes in this region identify the northernmost sites of the Corded Ware culture, (10[1])which probably (-5[1])spread westward with PIE.
