This was the southernmost region where students could be designated for punishment with “dialect cards” for using a local dialect. This region was ruled by two unrelated Shō dynasties after its unification under the Chūzan kings. The last feudal han domain was briefly implemented in this region after 54 sailors from this region were killed in the Mudan incident. This region’s Disposition ended its vassalage under the (*) Satsuma Domain established by the Shimazu clan in 1609. The enormous loss of life from invading this region as a staging ground for the planned Operation Downfall led to reconsideration of an invasion of the Home Islands.
